A light meal will be served.

Succession Planning for Nonprofit Leaders 10/14/2010 249 http://www.bestprojectonline.org/eventDetail.asp?ID=249 http://www.bestprojectonline.org/eventDetail.asp?ID=249

The $40 registration fee will allow you to bring three individuals from your organization.  We strongly encourage you to come in teams to make the most of the opportunity.

Registrants will be sent documents to prepare before the workshop to use during the working sessions .

Succession planning is a process that determines critical roles within an organization, identifies and evaluates possible successors, and provides personnel with the appropriate skills and experience for present and future leadership opportunities. During the course of this full-day workshop, participants will build upon their organization development expertise and examine different types of succession planning opportunities that focus on staff development of nonprofit organizations and board/volunteer development:

- Emergency Preparedness Plans
- Longer-term/Strategic Investment Plans for Leader Development
- Departure Defined Succession Plans

A benefit resulting from this training will be the potential to draft Emergency Preparedness Succession Plans for your organization.  Participants will use real-time information and resources in order to:

- Analyze the organizational structure
- Examine the roles, responsibilities and job description for one leader in the organization
- Draft an Emergency Preparedness Succession Plan
- Outline staff development and human resource management issues related to preparing designated   successors to “step up into this leadership role” capably

- Explore the responsibility of the board in supporting the plan and providing the financial resources for related professional development costs

Additionally, participants will discuss the need for a “succession policy” to codify the organization’s intention to cultivate and sustain leadership practices that will enhance the effectiveness of the organization.  Using the Emergency Preparedness Succession Plan as a platform, participants will explore key issues involved in encouraging organizations to adopt policies, practices and behaviors that support a longer-term investment in developing leaders among the staff (regardless of positional authority). They will also examine the importance of having a “departure-defined succession plan” when it is known that a leader in the organization is transitioning to a new opportunity.  There will be discussion regarding the board's role throughout the process.
