Accountability, Best Practices and Your Board

This two-hour workshop addresses the rapidly changing expectations surrounding nonprofit accountability and fiduciary responsibilities and teaches participants how to incorporate board accountability best practices into an action plan for their board. Recent developments are discussed including the impact of the IRS Form 990 overhaul, Sarbanes-Oxley Act, codes of ethics, the Independent Sectors Panel for the Nonprofit Sector, the Michigan Nonprofit Association’s Principles and Practices, and national and state legislative activity. 

Achieving Excellence as a Nonprofit Board

Ever wonder why some nonprofit boards seem to be higher performing than others?  This two-hour session helps board members and executive directors review models and practical tools for board performance.  This session is for individuals who are new to the world of nonprofit boards as well as for experienced trustees who want to brush up on their governance skills in light of the new economy.  Concepts, methods, and case studies address what defines a nonprofit, how nonprofits are governed, developmental stages of nonprofit boards, and the five major roles and responsibilities of board members.

Building Your Board*

This practical three and a half-hour session provides nonprofits with tools for board member recruitment and education. It also initiates their use of boardnetUSA, a national online database that connects candidates and nonprofits, including access to a growing pool of skilled applicants trained through a companion workshop, Serving on a Nonprofit Board.  

Committees That Work!

Learn the latest trends, best practices, and controversies in nonprofit board committee structure:  governance evolving from nominating, audit vs. finance, should executive committees be dissolved?  Receive practical guidance and tools to make committees productive, efficient, and creative.   Learn how to recruit and keep engaged committee members. 

How to Get Your Board to Raise Money

All development staff and executive directors want board members that will raise money.  But, if you ever asked a room full of board members “how many of you like to ask for money?” you would only see one or two hands in the air.  This is normal.  But how can we help our board members become the Ambassadors we desperately need them to be?  How can we get them comfortable with fundraising principals?  This workshop will help you, help your board!  Leave with practical tools to use right away.

Serving on a Nonprofit Board*

This three and a half-hour training addresses the roles and responsibilities of a board member, including board operations, strategic planning, resource development, oversight and ambassadorship. This is a great workshop for people exploring board service, for those new to nonprofit board service, and for experienced board members wanting to enhance their skills.  You'll also learn about boardnetUSA, a national online database that connects candidates and nonprofits.  After training, receive assistance in finding a board seat for no additional charge!
