Professional Summary ANIMAL WELFARE - As Interim Executive Director for the Michigan Humane Society, I managed an organization of 175 employees in five locations. I was the chief spokesperson on a variety of issues related to animal welfare and worked closely with management and staff on a full spectrum of issues. Later, as a consultant, I worked with the Board in developing the current strategic plan. ARTS & CULTURE - I have been deeply involved in the arts for more than 30 years as a board member and later as a consultant. I have worked with many groups in both the performing and visual arts doing strategy work as well as board and staff development. DISABILITY ISSUES - Our son, Andrews, suffered brain injury at birth and has been diagnosed with both cerebral palsy and autism disorder. I have worked on disability issues as his advocate for two decades and worked with the Michigan Special Education Advisory Committee (SEAC) helping to draft its response to the Special Education rules changes proposed by the Engler administration in 2002. EDUCATION - Much of my work in special education has been around creating parent involvement and empowerment as advocates for their children in the special education system. As a consultant, I have worked with many schools, school districts and school boards on educational strategy and community involvement. I am also a former secondary school teacher. NONPROFIT SECTOR ISSUES - Because of my law and business background, I have often been called on to provide advice and counsel on nonprofit operational issues as a part of the strategic planning process. I have used the Carver Model of Board Governance as a useful tool in board development work. SENIOR SERVICES - I have worked for a number of years with the Senior Alliance, one of the area agencies on aging. I have worked on both baord retreats and staff retreats and have become quite familiar with issues regarding the funding and delivery of senior services.
